Hooksway, Old Monkton, Chilgrove, Circle

This really is one of our all time favorites. If for any reason I am unable to go walking for some time, this is the one I turn to. It has the delightful ability to awaken you to all the countryside beauties. In Spring in particular, the birdsong is awe inspiring in both quantity and volume.

Start at Royal Oak Hooksway    go a few yards up the hill. As you approach a finger post you will face a choice of three directions yours is the middle path leading up the hill. Go up the hill following the path and

( Point 1) eventually you will come to a point where the main path seems to veer to the right don’t be tempted your path is to the left and continuing up the hill.
From this point it is about ¼ of a mile to a 4-finger post two directions pointing to the South Downs way,
(Point 2)   you want the right-hand lane leading to a stile. Cross the stile and follow the path through the field and down the hill.
(Point 3) Turn right at the next finger post (Here there is a fabulous oak tree on your right) and down the farm track to the small barn at the bottom
(Point 4)  then turn right and up the hill. At the top of the hill there is a gate go through the gate and follow the path through the forest. Eventually you will meet a made-up road
(Point 5) turn right and follow this road until you reach a 90-degree bend (Point 6) carry on till you reach another 90 degree bend this time to your left

(Point 7) turn down that bend.Walk towards the White horse inn and the main road and then turn right.

(Point 8) Walk on the grass bank and beware of fast-moving traffic. After about 50 yards go through the kissing gate and turn left.

(Point 9) Walk along the path leading through the field. When you reach another kissing gate

(Point 10) go through and then straight across the field. (the path is not always clear but there is a kissing gate on the opposite side that leads the way)

(Point 11) Go through this kissing gate and along the path towards a row of trees in front of you. (Point 12) Go through this row of trees and follow the path to a kissing gate about 100 yards from this row of trees. Go through the gate and turn right. (Point 13) (this stretch is often very muddy, and the puddles are quite deep). Carry on following the path until you come to two gates yours is the left of the two gates. (Point 14) Carry on up the path for about ¾ of a mile when you will come upon the Royal Oak.
