This walk is just a short toddle but the rewards are good. If your not quite up a longer walk this will fit the bill. For that matter if your feeling a little more energetic try doing it the other way round, that will tax your legs particularly at the beginning.

Starting at Hare and Hounds On leaving the pub turn left and go along the road to a farm on your right,

(Point 1) turn right here. Shortly after entering the farm yard you will see a long path on your left, turn up this path. This is old Barton’s farm Carry on this path until you reach the top

There is a seat on your left as you reach the top of this hill and this is a brilliant place to sit and look down the whole Stoughton valley marked with a view sign on map

(Point 2) turn right. This is Stoughton Down.
From Stoughton down carry on and eventually you will reach Bow Hill.

This is the highest point on the walks and the views are spectacular. On the one side you can see Chichester on the other there are views way over towards Up-park. All the effort is hugely rewarded at this point.

(Point 3) When you can drag yourself away, carry on walking on the path on which you arrived.
When you reach the end of this path turn right.

(Point 4) This path will lead you all the way down a very steep hill.

(Point 5) There are a few spots where you can sit and rest and just as you leave the forest going down the hill there is a granite seat and you don’t get a lot of Granite on the downs the main thing is of course its a very good spot to take in the view.

(Point 6) On the lower stages of this hill you will come across a memorial stone to a 23yr old Polish pilot who died in an Ariel battle over the downs in 1940. I’m so glad that he is remembered in this way, but what a sacrifice he made. At the bottom turn right and after a short stretch you will be back at the pub.

A word of caution here, especially if your not familiar with the downs. A lot of the hills you will come across are leaves or mud on smooth chalk and can be very slippery. Be very careful they look innocent but its as well to take this into account.
